SUPER SEDGEWICKS WHITE BOOTS AND PROVS TACTICAL GENIUS TAKES US TO THE TOP (ALMOST)!!
The visit of Glendenning Arms who we had already beaten in the cup was met with confidence after a wonderful win at home to Pelton the week before and the prospect of getting to the top of the table was urging the lads to get the business done. On a crisp morning the conditions for football were excellent and the pitch was in excellent nick for the weather we have been having. Prov went for an unchanged team after the victory the previous week and we knew it wasn't going to be an easy game but were determined to get the points. Unfotunately the determination wasn't really mirrored in the performance and Crosshill's huffed and puffed all day whilst stupid errors almost cost any points at all. Credit to Glendenning arms who matched us up formation wise and a determined yet well drilled side really took us all the way and in fairness deserved something from the game. Onto the game and we actually did start reasonably well pushing forward well and putting the Glendenning arms defence under pressure which resulted in Peter Sedgewick opening the scoring as he volleyed a shot from inside the box into the roof of the net. However we really took our foot off the gas and allowed Witton Gilbert to get back into the game. We created a couple of half chances but in a T*T for tat first half the score was 1-0 at the break. Prov voiced his dissapointment in the fact we didnt capitalise on a positive start and urged to go on and get the points.
The second half kicked off and we still didnt get going as Glendenning equalised as Bill dropped a cross and they finished from close range. Then we were dealt a further blow as they took the lead with another mistake and we were really up against it. We needed something and the man who was actually playing well Peter Sedgewick came up with some magic with a wonderful right foot drive from outside the box which flew into the left hand corner of the net to give us hope. Once again we just didnt capitalise and the referee awarded Glendenning a dubious penalty which the centre back finished calmly making Shep look a bit stupid to be fair. We were getting involved too much with arguing and argy bargy and not concentrating on the football enough. Cue Provs interjection as he replaced the poor on the day Nick Walker for Phil Bland and we scored immediately as a cross was met by Mally Dickenson who converted much to the relief of the whole team, management staff and crowd. We had got out of jail and looked like salvaging a point but we were given a dramatic ending as Bagshaw produced a fabulous ball from the right which we had been crying out for all morning and Phil Bland converted brilliantly with a Volley at the back stick to send everyone into raptures. Literally the last kick of the game and the ref blew his whistle a cruel cruel blow for Witton Gilbert Glendenning Arms who deserved something but the boys marched towards the top of the table we played poorly and won its something we wouldnt of done previously
