HEROES THE LOT OF EM !!
Lumley FC 3 – 5 Sedgefield NETPark
Well despite putting up a report saying a win was just around the corner the lads could of easily be forgiven for thinking that win just wasn’t going to come today. At Ten to Ten we had 10 men turned up for the away cup fixture to Lumley who are in our division after relegation from the 1st. When everyone did arrive at Lumley we had eleven men and were thankful we were going to be able to at least try and compete with them for 90 minutes. Spanna and Pulla really got it into us that today we really had to dig in together, work hard for each other and show those not there their places aren’t guaranteed. I explained before we went out that some of NETParks greatest triumphs have come in the face of adversity in particular a trip to Usworth where we had the bare 11 and got a fantastic 2-2 draw. This was our chance to do it once again.
We knew we had to put a shift in and with a couple of sore heads after weddings nobody shirked their responsibilities. Lumley did start well and passed it better than us in the opening exchanges resulting in them taking the lead after corner, it was a scrappy goal and we should of cleared the danger but im not criticising anyone after the performance we put in. The lads didn’t let the heads drop and slowly got ourselves back into the game inch by inch just building confidence, Pulla and Kev getting to grips in the middle, Dan and Macca forming an effective partnership down the left, Peaty and Shep solid at the back, Todd and Nick had the better of their men and Turland and Barber immense up front. We managed to get ourselves on level terms after Lee Peat rose at the back stick again to power in a header for 1-1. We started to get the better of Lumley and when Barber was brought down on the edge of the box Lee Peat stepped up and thrashed his shot through the wall and past the keeper for 2-1. Lumley weren’t going to just lay down though and were always in the game and duly equalised almost straight away. Then they got a bit of impetus again as they had a spell and once again took the lead from a set piece 3-2. But there was no lay down and die from our boys we wouldn’t leave them alone and we equalised through an unbelievable strike from Stephen Turland who was superb on the day. Todd Young crossed into the area and Cobra met on the volley from the edge of the box thrashing it into the top corner for 3-3. That goal really gave us confidence and we enjoyed a much better spell toward the end of the half. Then and lovely move in midfield saw Kev Broom slide the ball to the right to Nick Walker who looked up and first time threaded a ball low across the face of goal for Chris Barber to meet and push into the far corner for 4-3. Half Time and something to build on.
Spanna and Pulla delighted but we knew the second half was going to be hard hard work with no subs at all. We started brightly and played some excellent stuff second half as we dug in determined to try and get the win we desperately wanted. When a brilliant triangle of passing down the right saw Todd Young break into the box he lashed in another fantastic finish left footed into the top corner to make it 5-3. Finally we had a cushion to work with and we weren’t going to give it up easy. The lads dug in as the morning got hotter and hotter yet still played some lovely stuff in the mean time and might have had a couple more. It was like a scene from Platoon at times as we had 3 lads down injured at once. But in true Netpark spirit we wouldn’t let it go and saw the game out to claim a 5-3 victory in the 90 minutes. The lads were absolutely delighted and we have got our season well and truly underway. Huge huge well done to those who turned up and we got what we deserved.
